8 Non-Toxic Gift Ideas for Baby
There are SO many baby items with toxins in them. Plastic, things coated in plastic, metals can contain lead and/or aluminum, clothing contains formaldehyde, food and formula are toxic, diapers, etc. It's important for EVERYONE to use the least toxic items, but especially babies. Their skin is more sensitive, and we really should make the beginning of their life as safe as possible! According to this article, 232 chemicals were found in the umbilical cord blood of newborns! We need to reduce the toxin load.
Here's a list of some items that contain ZERO toxins (or way less toxins than conventional items). Feel comfortable in the gift you're giving to an infant. This list definitely doesn't include all categories or brands that are amazing, but it's a great starting point! I have included some affiliate links.
I love Babyganics! Babyganics is the first non-toxic brand I used when I was pregnant and I was so pleasantly surprised at the quality of their products. Babyganics items contain no: parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, artificial fragrances or dyes. They're Pediatrician and Dermatologist tested. They're products are made from natural plant-based ingredients and non-nano particles. This starter kit contains hand sanitizer, bubble bath, toy/high chair wipes, shampoo/body wash, dish soap, and lotion.
I found a couple great options! The first is a wooden teether that has no chemicals - no coating, no paint, no chemical treatments. It's made from Beechwood which is naturally antibacterial, so there's no need to sterilize the toy, just wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
Here's a beautiful organic Silicone teething necklace that mom wears and baby can chew on! This necklace is made from food grade 100% organic silicone and it's dishwasher safe.
I had the opportunity to try out a blanket from Panchhi. Their products are made from organic muslin cotton, non toxic dye and infused with ayurvedic herbs. They're hypoallergenic, 100% chemical free, and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.
Check out my Instagram post of my daughter and I cuddling and reading together while covered with a blanket from Panchhi. They have bibs, burp cloths, car seat covers, changing mats, sheets, towels, nursing covers, sleep sacks and blankets.
This brand of cloth diapers is made from 100% organic birdseye cotton. They can also be used for burp cloths, wash cloths, cleaning cloths. They're much more cost effective than disposable diapers and better for the environment as well.
There are a couple really good brands of disposable diapers available also: Earth's Best is hypoallergenic, chlorine free, latex free, dye free, fragrance free. Seventh Generation is hypoallergenic, chlorine free, fragrance free, made from sustainable wood pulp and FSC certified. Naty by Nature Babycare is chlorine free, latex free, TBT and fragrance free. They're made from biodegradable material and certified by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association.
Since wipes are a must and go with diapers, I'll share that the brand I'm really impressed with is Water Wipes. They're 99.9% purified water! They're awarded National Eczema Association of America Seal of Acceptance.
Organically Baby has some AWESOME organic clothing! They also have toys, swaddles, blankets, diapers, etc! Find them here.
Kate Quinn: organic and artisan apparel for your littles has adorable organic clothes. Find them here.
One item I really wish I would've had for my daughter when she was a baby is an organic mattress. Mattresses are so toxic and we all have our face directly on the mattress for 8 hours (hopefully) EVERYDAY! Organic mattresses are more pricey than non-organic, but avoiding all those toxins is priceless! I like this organic mattress because it's Greenguard Children & Schools Certified to have no harmful air emissions, and is made from coconut shell husks, natural cotton batting, eco-friendlier cushioning.
Essential oils are a must have for all homes! Everyone can benefit from them. I wrote a post here about Essential Oil basics. I don't recommend using any essential oil topically or internally with a newborn or small child. However, if the essential oil is certified pure it is safe to diffuse.
I 100% trust this brand of essential oils! I trust this brand because they conduct up to 8 different types of third party testing before the oil is bottled to ensure purity. Read more about the testing here.
As I mentioned, I would only diffuse around an infant or small child. This diffuser is made from real bamboo and would be a great night light too!
Gifts for the new mom:
I'm a big believer in giving something to the new mom or mom-to-be. Having a baby is a life changing event and can be amazing and stressful at the same time. Mom's also tend to put self-care last on their list, so I like to give them a reminder to pamper themselves.
I like to give skin care products because it's always fun to get new lotion or makeup! Of course, what we put on our skin starts to absorb within 30 seconds so it should definitely be safe skin care products that won't harm mom or baby. I love BeautyCounter products! They've eliminated over 1000 harmful chemicals typically found in skin care products, while still producing luxurious products. Check out their products here! I also wrote up an honest review of some of their products here.
I also love Be Pure Beauty! Their products have to meet their standards for clean skin care products...organic, free from the 'dirty 30' chemicals, responsibly sourced, etc. They carry several different 'green' skin care brands, and have products for baby as well!
