Top 10 Reasons Why You NEED to Invest in a Health Coach

You know cookies and ice cream are bad for you...yet you still find yourself polishing off a whole container. You know vegetables are necessary and you should exercise frequently....yet you don't eat vegetables and will come up with any excuse in the world to not exercise!

We all know what's good for us and bad for us, but the United States has the some of the worst health statistics of all civilized nations. Here are just a few of those scary statistics. 70% of deaths are as a result of a chronic illness. America's healthcare system induced deaths are the third leading cause of death in the US. (1) What gives?! Well, there's tons of misinformation out there, we all have beliefs that get in our way when we're making improvements in our life, we get overwhelmed and frustrated, we don't have guidance, we give up.

That's why you need to invest in a Health Coach!

According to The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (which is where I became certified), "A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority who works with clients to help them feel their best through food and lifestyle changes. Instead of prescribing one diet or way of exercising, a Health Coach customizes individualized wellness programs to meet their clients' needs."

WARNING...anyone can call themself a 'health coach'. It's unfortunate for those of us who have gone through programs to become certified and it's unfortunate for those who are looking for a real Health Coach. Some examples of those who refer to themself as a Health Coach, but aren't certified, are people who work for one specific product line or one specific program...they're only trained in that ONE program! Certified Health Coaches go through a legitimate program where they're taught strategies, various diet styles, techniques and tools to guide you on your journey to true wellness.

'But why do I need a Health Coach? My doctor has me on a special diet.' Let me start this section by saying that I have nothing against healthcare professionals (as a RN - I am one), and believe that they are very necessary at times. I also believe that we use our healthcare system incorrectly. Here's part of the reason why - Doctors don't have time nor do they have the education to make nutrition recommendations. Crazy right?! According to Dr. Michael Greger of (2) "In the United States, most deaths are preventable and related to nutrition...Medical students are still getting less than 20 hours of nutrition education". 20 hours?! I went through a YEAR long program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition

Also, when you need to go to your doctor you're probably already not feeling well. After your 5-10 minute appointment, the doctor prescribes you medication which is known to cover up your symptoms, have side effects, and doesn't get to the root cause. “People with medical degrees think about health intervention,” says Dr. Jahnke from Health Action. “It’s an allusion that medicine is prevention--it’s intervention. Prevention is people taking care of themselves.” Only 3% of healthcare funding is spent on prevention! A health coach helps you take steps necessary to have optimal health, get to the root cause of any negative health symptoms, and teach you how to prevent.

As a Health Coach, I wasn't just taught about over 100 diets, and the importance of exercise (remember we all already know that's important). I was also taught that relationships, spirituality, job satisfaction, finances, and other life factors are MAJOR contributors to our health. I learned how to help others be totally healthy...for a lifetime! I was taught to build customizable programs because each and every one of us is different and unique!  


Here are the top 10 reasons why you need a health coach:

A Health Coach will help you overcome barriers. So many things can get in our way of achieving any number of goals right? Stress, finances, kids, work...or are those just our excuses? I know you're busy, don't get me wrong. But we all seem to find plenty of time to check Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, e-mail, reality TV, etc for HOURS each day! That's because those are the things we prioritize. So we need to be able to shift some stuff around. A lot of 'barriers' are our mindset and our self-sabotaging thoughts. For example, I've heard "I don't know how you passed up those donuts! I'm just not the type of person who can pass it up. That's just me", "I just don't have time to exercise!" BAM! Self-sabotaged. If you catch yourself making statements like that, you just created a barrier for yourself to reach your health goals. As a Health Coach, I help you break through those thoughts and statements.

A Health Coach cuts through misinformation. We've all been fed A LOT of misinformation over the years. Like animals products contribute to cholesterol, sugar is fine in moderation, disease is genetic, counting calories is healthy. There are very minimal truths to those, but for the most part those are all false! Health Coaches have done the work researching all this information so that you don't have to!

A Health Coach will help you make 'healthy' a lifestyle. 'Health is a journey, not a destination.' I love that saying. To me it means that there's no end goal when it comes to health. Which is why I say that having short term goals (ie 'I want to lose 10 lbs by next month for that wedding I'm in or I'm going to eat healthy for 30 days), does way more harm to our health than it does good!  The one health goal I feel is the most important is to have the best quality of life we can have, forever!

As a nation, we don't make health a lifestyle because we're taught that it's normal to have declining health as we get older. I don't buy into that myth. Have you heard of blue zones? In "Blue Zones" 'people reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States'. (3) And they have a good quality of life until the day they pass away! There are 5 'Blue Zones' in the world! They're all in very different areas of the planet, but they have some common lifestyle factors like they eat a plant based diet, they're happy, their exercise is done naturally (ie gardening), they drink wine (whaaaat?!), they have strong community ties and more. Even if you think you're eating healthy, you probably aren't! Breakfast: whole wheat toast with margarine and orange juice. Lunch: yogurt and salad with low fat dressing. Dinner: spaghetti, garlic bread, boiled green beans. In reading this example of meals for a day, do you think "Wow that's really healthy?!". If so, you'd be wrong! This is a carb and sugar loaded day that sets us up for more sugar cravings, putting on weight and destroying our gut. A Health Coach can help you figure out what foods are really healthy!

A Health Coach guides you to learn what works for you! As I mentioned above, one of the things I learned at IIN is that we're all unique. You'd think that's common sense, but traditional 'diets' and health care professionals use programs and teachings that aren't designed for each individual person. Diets and medicine are typically a 'one size fits all' deal. Have you ever had a friend that used a skin care product that they rave about, then you try it and you hate it? That's because you are not your friend and your skin and what it needs is very different from your friends skin. It's the same everything! A Health Coach recognizes that and works with YOU as the unique one of a kind person you are.


A Health Coach teaches you to trust yourself. I never trusted that I was able to have control of my health. To be honest, I didn't even know I could have control until my early 30's. Before that, I trusted my doctor. Since starting to trust myself, I have more energy, less brain fog and migraines among many other improvements to my health. You are THE ONLY PERSON who knows you (and your family) the best so why do you not trust yourself? Health Coaches help you gain trust in yourself so that you have control over your family's health. I can not even begin to tell you how amazing it feels to have control of my family's health! When one of us starts to get sick, I know exactly what to do to make us better faster. Better yet, I know exactly what to do to keep us in better health in general!

A Health Coach helps you achieve TRANSFORMATION!! That's really what most of us are after when we begin to make improvements. You may begin by wanting to lose weight, gain energy, sleep better, decrease or get rid of negative health symptoms, be happy, get out of a rut, etc. When you reach one of those steps, you need to keep going and going. Along that journey you can get in your way again or become stagnant. You might come to a fork in the road. You might try something that doesn't work or that even sets you back a little. A Health Coach can help get you over those bumps, lead you on the right path, and help you achieve your ultimate transformation!!

You may not follow through on your own. We're human. We set lots of goals. It's SO easy to talk ourselves out of the steps that are necessary in achieving our goals. Does this sound familiar..."I'm tired. I'll go to the gym tomorrow", "One little donut won't hurt", "I'll apply for a new job next week". I know I've said ALL of those! Now imagine if you had a Health Coach to report to who is holding you accountable to achieve those goals you both developed together. You're gonna go to the gym, skip the donut and put in that application like now! It's really hard to make excuses when you know another person is holding you to your's even more difficult to make excuses when you're paying that person to hold you accountable!


There's so much more that goes into being healthy than just weight, food and exercise. I used to think that all I needed to do to get rid of my migraines and brain fog was eat better and exercise a little. Then, while I was going through the program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I was introduced to the 'Circle of Life'. The Circle of Life shows all 12 areas needed to live a truly healthy lifestyle. It helps you find out what areas of your life need the most improvement. Try for yourself here. As it was explained to us, you can eat kale and broccoli all day but if you're not doing well with finances, are in a bad relationship, if you're lost spiritually, can't be truly healthy! Do you see how transformation is huge?! It doesn't happen overnight. Health Coaches help guide you through all areas that make you completely well.

You're stressed/overwhelmed/frustrated. Been there! When I began making transformations I felt all of those! Because I had no guidance, encouragement, or support...I gave up. I ended up back at square one. I felt like a failure. I KNEW I had to make changes to stop feeling to crappy, but I didn't know exactly what to do or how hard it would be. Yes, making changes is hard. But for me it was much harder to feel like shit. I really could've used a Health Coach because that person would've helped me get to the point I'm at today much faster, and it would've been much easier. That's a huge reason why I became a Health be that person I wish I had when I was making my healthy lifestyle improvements.

Ok I couldn't stop at 10 reasons, so here's one more.

A Health Coach is your personal cheerleader - A Health Coach guides you through your fears, obstacles and self limiting beliefs to really get to the nitty-gritty of why you're not making the best choices for yourself. I'm here to encourage, motivate, support while educating and holding you accountable. I will cheer you on through each goal you achieve, and through the difficult times.
